Much of the time spent in Barcelona was spent doing many a typical tourist activity, which is great, and always fun. It's an quick and easy way to get a rough idea of the city when you're only there for a short time. However, as interesting and informative as these places often were, there was a real sense of cultural detachment, and it was hard to shake the 'touristy' feel of them.

One of the things I was most fascinated about during my time there was the incredible graffiti around the city. It showed to me how Barcelona and it's youth really are, better than any Bus Turístic could (please note that I am in no way criticising the Bus Turístic; I loved that guy).

I spent my last few hours in Barcelona walking around the back of the Raval district, where people were playing basketball together on courts lined with the most astounding street art you'll ever see, and grafitti arts were working together in broad daylight, finishing their latest piece in peace. It felt like a real community, like I was finally seeing the real Barcelona.

Then I saw this stencil on a nearby wall, and thought, yes.

Yes.

in france, too, especially paris, the metro is littered with talented graffiti artists. it's a joy to look at. this photo's cool - i like the division, even through your choice of where to take the shot - kinda reminds me of a book.

safe xx

Yeh, I went to Madrid a while back.. and the girl I stayed with lived like 45 mins out of the city, so on the train I'd see all the fantastic artwork as you come into the cit centre. Awesome. Far less "tagging" and more actual constructive art.
